A Basic Guide to Men's Skincare Routines

If you've been struggling with dry, flaky skin or oily patches on your cheeks, it's time to get a handle on your skincare routine. Skincare is different for men and women—and yes, we do have different needs when it comes to our faces! Below are some basic tips for men who want healthy skin but don't know where to start:

Wash your face twice per day.

You may be used to washing your face once per day, or even twice a week. However, the skin on your face needs more attention than any other area of the body. To keep it looking its best, you should wash your face twice daily with a gentle cleanser that doesn't contain harsh chemicals or abrasive ingredients.

Don't scrub too hard—this could actually cause damage and irritation to the delicate skin on your face. It's also important not to overdo it! Washing more than two times per day can dry out and irritate already-sensitive facial skin.

Moisturize twice per day.

Moisturize twice per day. After washing your face, apply an appropriate moisturizer to the entire face, not just dry areas. A good moisturizer will take care of any dry patches and help keep your skin hydrated throughout the day.

Use sunscreen every day.

Sunscreen is essential to any man's daily skincare routine. If you're going to be in the sun, it's important that you wear sunscreen on your face and body. The skin on our faces is just as susceptible to sun damage as the skin on our bodies, so make sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of 30 or higher (SPF 15 is generally enough for most people).

Some men prefer sprays or sticks because they feel like less hassle than lotions, but if you want to avoid ingredients like oxybenzone (which has been linked with hormone disruption), choose an SPF 30+ lotion instead. Reapply every two hours when outdoors—at least!

Exfoliate once per week.

Exfoliating once per week is recommended for men with dry to normal skin. For those with oily, acne-prone and/or sensitive skin, exfoliating twice a week is best.

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and unclogs pores that are clogged with dirt and oil. It also helps clear up acne (yes, even for guys) because it helps reduce the amount of bacteria on your face that cause breakouts. Exfoliation can help prevent fine lines and wrinkles as well as keep your face looking younger longer by keeping your collagen levels up (collagen makes your skin smooth). Be sure to use a moisturizer or repair cream afterwards to keep your skin hydrated!

Men's skin is different from women's. Men have thicker, oilier skin than women and more hair on their faces—which can lead to acne and ingrown hairs (you know, those little red bumps on your cheek). But that doesn't mean you're doomed to a life of dried-out skin with deep wrinkles! You can take care of your face by following the steps we listed and using the right products.
